About Me: About

DR PAUL C. MASA
DPSYCH MSC DIP MBACP (ACCRED.) BPC

Before becoming a psychotherapist, I trained as a performer at ArtsEd and worked professionally in theatre, including in West End productions of Mamma Mia!, Blood Brothers, Fame and Starlight Express. My own experience of therapy in my twenties was transformative and ultimately led me to retrain as a therapist. Creativity has remained an important thread in my life and continues to inform how I think about identity, expression and psychological life.

Training

My clinical training was at Birkbeck, University of London, where I obtained an MSc in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy. I’m a Senior Accredited member of the BACP, a full registrant of the BPC, and an accredited DIT practitioner. My training and experience are aligned with SCoPEd Column C, reflecting my advanced training and scope of practice.

I undertook clinical training in Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT) in collaboration with the Anna Freud Centre, alongside further training in Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT). I later completed supervision training with the British Psychotherapy Foundation (BPF) and a Diploma in Group Work Practice at the Institute of Group Analysis (IGA). My additional training includes Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) with the Oxford Mindfulness Centre and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).

In 2024, I completed a Doctorate in Psychotherapy at Metanoia Institute and Middlesex University, with doctoral research exploring minority stress. That same year, I progressed to the qualifying stage of Group Analyst training with Group Analysis North in Manchester, a UKCP-accredited programme through the Institute of Group Analysis.

Ethics are central to my work, and I adhere fully to the BACP Code of Ethics, which you can read here.

Experience

I began my clinical career as an honorary psychodynamic psychotherapist within an NHS secondary-care Community Mental Health Team, working long-term with people experiencing complex psychological difficulties. This was a demanding and deeply formative experience that established the foundations of my clinical practice.

I went on to work as a student counsellor at London Metropolitan University and University College London, providing individual psychotherapy and facilitating therapeutic groups. I subsequently worked for several years within NHS Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services as a Dynamic Interpersonal Therapist, including at South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, and Compass Wellbeing CIC in Tower Hamlets.

In 2017, I joined Birkbeck, University of London, as a Widening Participation Student Counsellor, where I also led research exploring barriers to accessing counselling among men, refugees and care-experienced students. I later returned to NHS secondary care with East London NHS Foundation Trust, working as both a group and individual psychotherapist in Newham.

I have worked in independent practice since 2013, moving into full-time private practice in 2021. Alongside my clinical work, I supervise other therapists and continue to develop my work in group analysis, research and writing.

Personal Therapy

I believe a therapist’s own experience of therapy is a fundamental part of their development. It offers an understanding of what it is like to sit in the other chair, while deepening the self-awareness needed to work thoughtfully with the complexity of another person’s inner world.

My own therapeutic journey has accompanied me throughout my professional life and continues to inform the way I practise. It has included five years of Jungian analysis during my initial training, person-centred therapy and hypnotherapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, further Jungian analysis while living in the United States, and ongoing group analysis as part of my Group Analyst training.
